Essential Car Care Tips for New England Drivers

From potholes to salt corrosion, New England roads can be tough on your vehicle. Here’s how to protect your car and stay safe.

Essential Car Care Tips for New England Drivers

Surviving the Seasons in Connecticut

Driving in East Hartford and the surrounding New England areas means dealing with distinct seasonal challenges. From winter road salt to spring potholes, your vehicle needs specific care to stay reliable and safe.

1. Battle the Road Salt

Connecticut roads are heavily treated with salt and brine in the winter. While this keeps us safe from ice, it's a nightmare for your car's undercarriage. Rust can form quickly on brake lines, exhaust systems, and suspension components.

  • Tip: Get an undercarriage wash regularly during winter months.
  • Tip: Inspect your brake lines for corrosion during every oil change.

2. Watch Out for Potholes

Spring in New England reveals the damage winter left behind: potholes. Hitting a pothole can knock your wheels out of alignment instantly, leading to uneven tire wear and pulling steering.

If you hit a large pothole, listen for new noises and pay attention to how your car handles. A wheel alignment check is often cheaper than replacing a set of ruined tires.

3. Tire Pressure Fluctuations

New England temperatures can swing 30 degrees in a single day. For every 10-degree drop in temperature, your tires can lose 1 PSI of pressure. Low tire pressure reduces fuel economy and traction.

Check your tire pressure monthly, especially when the seasons change.

4. Fluid Check

Ensure your antifreeze (coolant) is fresh and rated for low temperatures. Also, switch to a winter-grade windshield washer fluid that won't freeze on your windshield.

At Strong's Alignment, we know New England cars because we've been fixing them since 1998. Whether it's a post-winter alignment or a pre-winter inspection, we're here to help.
